This listing is for a rare and wonderful Antique / Vintage Salt Stone Nativity / Creche Sculpture from my grandparents’ travels back in the 1950’s or so and likely from Italy (I couldn’t find a company name or country of origin though). It is a delicate and beautiful piece. It depicts the holy family, shepherds, etc. with an angel watching over the scene. The sculpture is made of a white stone substance that has a salt-like texture. Some might call it white sandstone. The porous surface makes it easy to leave tiny specks of dirt on it - a couple of these blemishes can be seen from a short distance but most were only captured by my photos and each has been pointed out in the pictures. Since the sculpture would dissolve if immersed in water, I didn’t try washing it but it might be possible to remove the blemishes with a q-tip and cleaner. On the base there is also a spot that there was either a chip that was repaired or more likely a small manufacturing flaw. Even with those blemishes, the sculpture is a exquisite piece and the intricate details are captivating.
This sculpture measures approximately 8 inches high at the tallest point and 2 3/4 inches deep at the base. The width across is approximately 6 inches. The statue has a hefty weight to the stone, at around 2.5 pounds. Let us know if you need additional photos.
