This listing is for an INCREDIBLY RARE 1964 John F. Kennedy commemorative first day of issue postal cover signed by Warren H. “Butch” Burroughs, now deceased.

On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as his motorcade made its way through the streets of downtown Dallas, Texas, allegedly by Lee Harvey Oswald, from a sixth floor window of the Texas School Book Depository building on the corner of Elm and Houston Street.

Following the assassination, Oswald fled the scene of the shooting and eventually ended up at the Texas Theatre on Jefferson Blvd. in Oak Cliff, after allegedly also shooting and killing Dallas Police officer J.D. Tippit.

John Brewer, the manager of Hardy's Shoe Store, saw a man acting strangely outside his shop on Jefferson Blvd. He said "The police cars were racing up and down Jefferson with their sirens blasting and it appeared to me that this guy was hiding from them. He waited until there was a break in the activity and then he headed west until he got to the Texas Theatre."

Brewer walked down the street and went into the theatre where he spoke to Warren Burroughs, who was working the concession stand inside the theatre at the time, about this suspicious character. Burroughs had seen him enter the balcony of the theatre.

Julia Postal, the ticket taker, then called the police and alerted them of the suspicious man. Burroughs and Brewer stood guard at the exits of the theatre until the Dallas Police arrived.

When the police arrived, Brewer accompanied the officers into the cinema where he pointed out the man he had seen acting in a suspicious manner. After a brief struggle, Lee Harvey Oswald was arrested.

Burroughs was only feet away from Oswald as he was apprehended and taken out of the theatre.
