Re:

listening device

for Mr. Cranz's room

Your letter dated July 28, 1939 MO.6234/Ka.9083

With your above-mentioned letter you confirm to us that your fitter has sent it to you wolf

transmitted order

Exchange Mr. Cranz's station against a listening device W/Sigt.

Like us, your fitter Wolf Teitunger in the rooms of the tergen crana and Sachsenberg eder originally

from Mr. Sachsenberg. The delivery of another listening device is not possible until further notice. Likewise, the cables required to install a second listening device are not currently available, so it is not possible to lay the cables in Mr. Cranz's room as a precautionary measure for a later connection of the listening device.

For this reason we arranged for Mr

Cranz that is attached

Originally intended device without listening device since the laying of the cables is now final

The rooms had to be completed with iapets etc. before long.

We therefore ask that the order placed at the time for a listening device for Mr. Cranz's room be canceled and would be grateful for confirmation in this regard.

Land- und See-Leichtbau

Heil! Hitle r !========================

Land und See Leichtbau GmbH -In 1936, Gebr. Sachsenberg AG in Berlin, a mechanical engineering and later shipbuilding company, founded Land und See Leichtbau GmbH with plants in Kiel and at the Neumünster air base, where the Leichtbau GmbH was located in the "Cattle sale Hall" (today's Holstenhalle) from 1939 operated an aircraft repair yard. The Berlin company's first branch was built at Sedanstrasse 19-21. By order of the National Socialist authorities, Land und See also employed C.C. camp prisoners as forced laborers during the WW2. In addition to ELAC, Franz Rohwer, Sörensen & Köster, AEG and Drägerwerke, Land und See was Berlin's most important armaments company. It is not yet clear how many worked there were exactly. The Sedanstrasse, Rendsburger Strasse and Schützenstrasse plants are well known. However, works up to Roman VI were included in the lists.

In 1944, Land und See had 2,328 employees in Neumünster, many of whom were forced laborers. In 1942, for example, 392 prisoners of war from Russia and 81 prisoners of war from France were counted on land and sea. While the Russians were housed in the Wittorf camp, the French were housed in the Rendsburger Straße 133/139 camp. Unfortunately, the information on foreign workers is very incomplete. What is clear, however, is that Eastern workers had to live in a barrack on Sedanstrasse and that a large group of prisoners of war from the Netherlands also had to work on land and sea. A list of the foreign camps in Neumünster (including prisoners of war) from the employment office from July 1944 demonstrates the distribution of foreign forced laborers on land and sea. In the first camp with a capacity of 500 people there were 452 people, in the second camp with a capacity of 550 people there were 543 people. The camps were packed with 1,000 forced laborers. The conditions must have been terrible. One of the camps was the Christian school at Christianstrasse 23, which no longer exists today. There is now an unsightly parking deck at this point.

In February 1944, the company apparently requested masses of "workers from the East" from the mayor in order to maintain production for the "total war":

"...I still have very significant needs from the company Land-und See-Leichtbau GmbH... and the railway, which are creating their own accommodation options."

On November 6th, 1944 there was an air raid on the Land und See residential camp, Rendsburgerstr. 133/139. It was hit by 14 high-explosive bombs, killing two Italian workers and completely destroying four barracks.
