RARE – SEED 11" Museum Quality Carboniferous Fern Fossil FRONDS St Clair PA Mine:
$70.00

This amazing – 11"×7" – carboniferous fern fossil is a true museum-quality piece with aesthetic frond placement. It has a large rarely seen seed on the middle right, large silver and small bold frond imprints (including Neuropteris, and Alethopteris and at least one Sphenophyllum) and stunning preservation - this fossil is sure to impress any collector or enthusiast. Excavated in the now closed site at St. Clair Coal Mine in Pennsylvania of the United States, this piece is a rare find and a valuable addition to any collection.

Believe it or not, these specimens are 100% natural. It is their exceptional state of preservation that gives the Saint Clair, Pennsylvania fossil ferns their acclaimed exquisiteness. They fell into a swamp where silt, mud, and sediments amassed on top of them.  Low temperatures, high pressure, lack of oxygen, and a lot of time helped these ferns slowly mineralize into Pyrite.  Pyrophyllite (Aluminum Silicate) replaced the Pyrite at an ensuing stage, creating a bold white color. Any orange or gold tint that may (or may not) be present was caused naturally by the presence of iron ores.  This unique type of fossilization makes these specimens perfect for mineral collecting as well as fossil collecting.

The locality where these were mined contained dozens of species, so look closely, and you may very well find something rare.  More commonly found are Alethopteris, Neuropteris, Pecopteris, and Sphenophyllum. These ferns died well over 300 million years ago! Seed ferns went completely extinct around 73 million years ago, while the dinosaurs were still around!

We NEVER paint, repair, or touch our fossils up.  Nature and time are the artists.

Perfect for display or educational purposes, this fossil is a unique window into the past. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just starting, this piece is a must-have for anyone interested in fossils and natural history. Don't miss out on the opportunity to own this exceptional piece of former times.
