RARE PRESIDENT KENNEDY JOHNSON NIXON Army One President’s Helicoper Matchbook:
$15.00

Vintage Aviation Matchbook: “United States President - Army One”.

Army one is now history, but this rare unused matchbook lives on as a remembrance of the first presidential aircraft.

Used by Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon and Ford, this helicopter was in service until 1976 when it was taken out of service permanently. Now the Marine Corps has a sole responsibility for transportation of our president.

This match book is in excellent condition, it is unused and doesn’t have any blemishes or stains that I can see. Would make a nice addition to your collection.

History of Army One

Army One is the callsign of any United States Army aircraft carrying the president of the United States. From 1957 until 1976, this was usually an Army helicopter transporting the president. Prior to 1976, responsibility for helicopter transportation of the president was divided between the Army and the U.S. Marine Corps until the Marine Corps was given the sole responsibility of transporting the president by helicopter.

In a test run known as “Operation Alert,” Dwight D. Eisenhower became the first president to fly in a helicopter, on July 12, 1957, when he was transported from the White House to Camp David.

Helicopters soon became indispensable in presidential travel—both within the United States and abroad—though the uncomfortable Bell was quickly replaced by larger models.

Different helicopter models have been used over the years. The Sikorsky VH-3A was introduced during the John F. Kennedy administration, and the VH-3D entered service during Jimmy Carter’s presidency.

VH-3A tail number 150617 on display at the Nixon Library. It was in the presidential fleet from 1961 to 1976, and often flew as Army One.

During its presidential service, the helicopter was known either as Marine One or Army One, depending on whether Marine or Army pilots were operating the craft.[3] The helicopter, with seats for sixteen, has a seat reserved for the president and the first lady, and single, smaller seats for the two Secret Service agents who always flew with the presidential party.
