For Consideration is a Fine, Extremely Rare Original British Napoleonic/ Trafalgar Era Pre-1804 Figure-8 Naval Cutlass!

Extremely Rare Original British Napoleonic/ Trafalgar Era Pre-1804 Figure-8 Naval Cutlass
This is a pre-1804 British Royal Navy marked "double disk" or figure-8 naval cutlass with round sheet metal grip and single fullered slightly curved unmarked blade. This was a pattern commonly found in the mid to late 18th century (1750-1796) used by both British and American navies as documented in the authoritative "Boarders Away" reference guide. Measuring 33 inches overall, with a 28 ¼ blade these were often held without scabbards in racks aboard ship to allow instant access to repel boarders.
This cutlass was 100% in service during the Battle of Trafalgar. Most of these cutlasses did not survive the harsh conditions (salt and arduous service life); they were in use well after the Battle of Trafalgar, gradually replaced by the 1805 pattern with the ribbed grip. This one appears to have lasted courtesy of black paint, quite likely re-applied at some time.

A Cared for well-maintained Sword with very little pitting, clearly absolutely original, just as used at the Battle of Trafalgar!

Other than a couple nicks in the blade from fighting, some minor pitting and a little movement in the grip (Usual) everything really nice and tight!
