Acquired from her estate, offering this WWII grouping and photo archive of Constance “Connie” Jones-Cruise, daughter of ThomasGriffith Jones and Miriam Jauchler Jones. The 47 original photos and two photopostcards in this lot illuminate her life in the Navy; includes several studioportraits. From 1 7/8 to 2 3/4” to 7 ¾ x 9 ¾.” Born in 1922, Connie grew up inSan Antonio, Texas. From a newspaper article: She graduated from Incarnate WordCollege in 1943 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and mathematics. Aftergraduation, she joined the U.S. Navy WAVES as an electronics engineer. When I[Connie] received my bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry in 1943, Ihad a strong foundation in science, and a love for learning and the scientificmethod which sustained me in my advanced engineering studies at Harvard and MITso that I could work as a naval officer in the Boston Navy Yard Radar Laboratoriesduring World War II. Jones was one of a small number of women who became aCommander in the U.S. Navy Reserve and was also an Honorary Admiral in theTexas Navy. After the war, she was an analytical chemist with the TexasPharmacal Company (now DFB Pharmaceuticals) where she was the only industrialchemist in San Antonio in the early 1950s. Thereafter, Jones devoted her lifeto the education of young people teaching high school and college mathematicsfor many years.
