Harry S. Truman(May 8, 1884 – December 26, 1972) was the33rdpresident of the UnitedStatesfrom 1945 to 1953, succeeding upon thedeath ofFranklin D. Rooseveltafterserving as the 34thvicepresident. He implemented theMarshall Planto rebuild the economy ofWestern Europe, and established theTruman DoctrineandNATO.Truman grew up inIndependence, Missouri,and duringWorld War Iwas senttoFranceas a captain in the Field Artillery. Returninghome, he opened ahaberdasheryinKansas City, Missouriandwas later elected as aJackson Countyofficialin 1922. Truman was elected to theUnited States SenatefromMissouriin 1934 and gained national prominence aschairman of theTruman Committeeaimedat reducing waste and inefficiency in wartime contracts. Soon after succeedingto the presidency he authorized thefirst andonly use of nuclear weapons in war. Truman's administration engagedin aninternationalistforeignpolicy and renouncedisolationism. He ralliedhisNew Deal coalitionduringthe1948presidential electionand won a surprise victory that securedhis own presidential term. After the onset of theCold WarTruman oversaw theBerlin AirliftandMarshall Planin 1948. WhenNorth KoreainvadedSouth Koreain 1950,he gainedUnited Nationsapprovalto intervene in what became known as theKorean War. On domestic issues, bills endorsed by Truman facedopposition from aconservative Congress, buthis administration successfully guided the U.S. economy through the post-wareconomic challenges. In 1948, he submitted the first comprehensive civil rightslegislation and issuedExecutive Order 9981tostart racial integration in the military and federal agencies. Corruption inthe Truman administration became a central campaign issue in the1952presidential election. AfterRepublicanDwight D. Eisenhower'selectoral victory against DemocratAdlai Stevenson II, Trumanwent into a financially difficult retirement, marked by the founding of hispresidential library and the publication of his memoirs. When he left office,Truman's presidency was criticized, thoughcritical reassessmentof his tenure has been favorable.
