Dakota - ArtworkThis may very well be the ONLY ONE OF THESE STILL IN EXISTENCE!Paper placemats, due to their delicate nature, and throw-away design, RARELY survive for any length of time.THIS paper placemat is over 60 years old and survived only due to being sandwiched between 2 pages of a scrapbook.
The placemat features the name 'The '76 Cafe' in old Western font - so named due to the history of Deadwood South Dakota: in 1876 miners moved into the northern Black Hills after the discovery of gold two years prior.
The placemat features artist renderings of WILD BILL HICKOK, CALAMITY JANE, and SETH BULLOCK, along with a great mural depicting miners panning for gold, coonskin cap wearing explorer riding hoseback, and a native indian watching from behind a boulder. We were unable to find an artist's name anywhere on the rendering - but it is a great piece of work - showing the Black Hills in the background.
Based upon postcards from that era featured online naming the restaurant as part of a Motel - Cafe - Gift Shop - dated 1960...setting the date of this item at 1960 should be quite accurate.
Condition is as seen - one small stain that may or may not be removable - we did not want to attempt it.
