Very Early, RAREChild's 1-Room School House SLATE, c.1850-55 ! REGULAR ANTIQUE CHILD"S SCHOOL SLATES ARE VERY NEAT. Scans show it all, including the "dovetailed" corners and wood joinery that was used in the frames, similar to the single slates. This one shows that there was a thin piece of wood surrounding the perimeter of the frame, and that it was covered by a heavy red fabric attached by early hand-made nails. I have never seen one before with the wood surrounding it. Probably meant to re-enforce the thin wooden frame and help protect the fragile slate. Only remnants of the red fabric remain on these. Nicely made, by hand. There is the date 1882 written on the slate, indicating that it was still being used for many years after it was initially made. This makes a great decorationitem, hanging on a wall in a kitchen, family room, or living room, or on a shelf or mantel. GREAT FOR DECORATION OR CAN ACTUALLY BE USED. Also, a great addition to an education or early school collection or display. It is just a really nice, primitive Americana item from the early days of our country. You can use it. Great for a unique collection, use, or as A GREAT, VERY UNIQUE PIECE FOR A DECORATOR. A large slate that measures about 10 7/8” long x 8” wide. In very good, complete condition with a nice aged patina to the wood and slate, and a nice antique look!!! You can see and feel the years of use to the wood smoothness. It also has some "personalization", as shown, in a couple of places on the side and in the corners where the child did some doodling so many years ago!! A RARE, ORIGINAL, GREAT-LOOKING, NICE ANTIQUE PERSONALIZED SCHOOL ITEM !!!
