Adolph Heinrich Joseph Sutro (April 29, 1830 – August 8, 1898) was a German-American engineer, politician and philanthropist who served as the 24th mayor of San Francisco from 1895 until 1897. Born a German Jew, he moved to Virginia City, Nevada and made a fortune at the Comstock Lode. Several places in San Francisco bear his name in remembrance of his life and contributions to the city.
A Mining engineer who formed the Sutro Tunnel Company which constructed a tunnel to provide ventilation, drainage, and an easy means of transporting men and materials to and from the mines in the region of the Comstock Lode. Retiring to San Francisco in 1879, he became active in civic and business affairs, and was elected mayor in 1894.
Rare Nevada Bank of San Francisco check, 8.25 x 3.25, filled out in another hand and signed by Sutro, \"Adolph Sutro,\" payable to P. W. Triat for $85, July 31, 1897. Mounted, matted, and framed with an image to an overall size of 13.75 x 13.75. In fine condition.
