RARE CAMPAIGN FERROTYPE - CONFEDERATE VICE PRESIDENT NOMINEE HERSCHEL JOHNSON 1860- I can tell you how rare this campaign ferrotype is, because at Heritage sale House in one of their past sales said that campaign images of Herschel Johnson had never come to the marketbefore, making this example equally rare! What is even more rare about this early campaign item is the fact it was created as a type of brooch to be pinned to an attached ribbon on someone's lapel. In all my years of collecting tintypes and political photography, this is the first and only one I have ever seen of Johnson. The exact portrait on this campaign item can be seen on any google search of Herschel Johnson life and career.

Johnson had been the Governor and Senator of Georgia, before being selected as the Confederate Democrat running mate by Stephen Douglas in his presidential offer against Abraham Lincoln. Like many of the politicians of during the Civil War, Herschel Johnson owned a 156 slaves on a group of his properties. I am sure that after President Lincoln was elected many of his rivals campaign buttons such as this example were merely discarded as the losers of the election and when slavery was soon abolished.I have listed this incredibly rare item with a low starting price and a very fair BUY IT NOW option. CONDITION:Please view my detailed photos for the actual condition of this image and as part of my description. The campaign tintype is mounted to a pot stamped pot metal or tin buckle mount. The tintype itself stands a mere 9/16th inches in height. The image contains excellent contrast, tonal range and superb sharpness as you can clearly see in my first listing photo. Other than missing the original ribbon I believe was pinned to someone's lapel, this item is in outstanding antique condition; especially for being 159 years old. An incredibly historic tintype for your personal collection of political photography or to placed in your display of Civil War era artifacts.
