Robert Oppenheimer - Leslie Groves - Los Alamos, New Mexico - World War II Size: 1-1/2\" W x 1-1/4\" H Material: Brass Exceptional condition with pin back (see photos for details)Historical Significance of Item: Manhattan Project was the common name for what was officially known as the Manhattan Engineer District (MED), the WWII activities related to the development of the atomic bomb. During the Manhattan Project, scientists came to realize the central role that high explosives would play in the detonation of the various atomic bomb designs.Within the already top-secret Los Alamos site (often referred to as \"Site Y\") was a more restricted location, S-Site, where high explosives castings and lenses were developed, manufactured, and tested. In December 1943, approval came for the development of a more restricted high-explosives area away from the primary technical area near an old sawmill site, where a large pile of sawdust remained from former lumber operations. Thus, this location received its name: \"S-Site,\" or \"Sawmill Site.\"The badges were issued in pairs, with one to be worn on site and the other to be left with guards, allowing them to monitor who was physically present. Note: In 40 years of collecting, I have only found one otherexample of this rare variation of an S-Site badge. Instead of the two-digit or three-digit format typically listed on (e.g., \"58\" or \"234\"), this badge is two digits plus W (with W denoting Weapons Group/Division according to a local historian).
