Here we have aRARE Antique, Laflin Mfg. Co., RODIER\'s 1879 Patented S-WAVY Sole Jack Smooth Plane !! Here is a little background on this plane as gleaned from PTAMPA Vol. 1, pages 183-185, and from \'The Superior Works\' website. LouisRodier received Patent No. 212,986 forhis plane on March 4th, 1879. His patented planes were only manufactured by LaflinManufacturing Co. of Westfield, Massachusetts for a few short years (1879-1882).Rodier\'s patented idea was to regulatethe mouth and the set of the iron simultaneously and proportionately via asingle adjustment. The planes have a spoked wheel adjuster that rocks theiron\'s bed about an axis near the throat; turning the wheel to the right reducesthe iron\'s set by lowering the iron\'s pitch and consequently closes the throat,while turning the wheel to the left raises the iron\'s pitch to increase theiron\'s set and opens the throat.Rodier\'s planes have a realstriking design to them. The sides of the plane are vertically \'corrugated\' or \'fluted\' togive them strength. But, the most striking feature of his planes are thesinuous (\'S\' Wavy) corrugations cast into the sole. All originalexamples of his planes have Walnut wood totes and knobs, withthe occasionalMahogany examples showing up. They also have thick tapered single irons manufactured by BUCK BROTHERS. (additionalinfo is availableat the references noted above)This example of his 14.5\"L Jack plane has all the attributes noted above with the Tote and beaded front knob being made of Walnut. It is inVery Good \'used tool\' condition with repaired cracks in rear sidewall, performed by an earlier owner. The original japanning has wear from use. The frog mechanismworks as it should. The full length, 2\" wide cutting single iron by Buck Bros. is correct. It has the correct lever cap and tightening knob.
