Rare and incredibly hard to find at this price and quality! Typical Museum Piece.
This a wooden Guatemalan dance mask with layers of thick polychrome paint with an overload of personality that would be dated back to 1890-1910. This would have been used over decades during the Baile de la Conquista (Dance of the Conquest), a traditional dance reenactment of the invasion led by Spanish Conquistadors, particularly Pedro de Alvarado, against Tecum Uman. This particular mask has a fish motif, with two fish facing each other representing the intense eyebrows and a wildly beautiful fish tail for mustache and beard. Colors include blue, turquoise, red, black, yellow, green, orange and pink. The fish tail is painted with vibrantly colored scales that descend in a rainbow of colors.
There are chips to the multi-layered thick polychrome paint that would be typical for its age and frequent use in the ceremonial dance. There are thin slits for the dancer to see through below the painted eyes. There is a hole near the top center for hanging and a wire hanger has been added for ease of displaying.
