Antique 19th Century "J.B. STOHLER" Signed HAND FORGED BROAD AXE Schaefferstown Pa!!!An early signed by J. B. Stohler (John Beamesdorfer Stohler, a blacksmith born 1841, made axes in Johnstown & Schafferstown, Pennsylvania, 1866-1919) . He was a Master Axe Tool Maker.From a newspaper article that has a photo of J.B. Stohler at his workshop:"In a rickety frame shack near Schaefferstown, John Beamesdorfer Stohler (1841-1920), made axes and other cutting tools. His father, John N. Stohler, was a blacksmith. J. B. Stohler must have taken pride in his work for today his axes are collector's items. Two things account for this: First of all Stohler's tools were superior to others from the start. By molding a piece of tempered steel over the cutting edge of an ax, Stohler imparted durability to the edge. His axes would stay sharper longer. Naturally his wares were the most expensive. Secondly, Stohler marked his tools with a distinctive cross either above or below his name, and collectors of anything always prefer signed pieces. Stohler's workshop is gone. His house, however, still stands off St. 501, south of Schaefferstown, near the Penn Dale warehouse....
It measures approximately 19.5" in total length (top tip of axe head blade to the bottom of the handle). The axe head itself is approximately 7.5" in length with the blade measuring approximately 7 3/8" wide (tip to tip). Both sides of the axe are signed "J.B. STOHLER" and include the stamped "X" cross. It is perfectly authentic as found retaining what appears to be its original handle and in fair good antique condition (photos clearly show pitting to blade) - please view all of the photos as they are a very important part of the item description.
