RARE Medal ANTIQUE PendetSt.Benedict

Medieval badge circa 16th century AD

A survivingdrawing from 1415, made in a monastery in Metten (Austria), depicts an abbot(St. Benedict?) defending himself against an invisible enemy with a crosiertopped with a cross. The same words are written on the crosier that are todayon the reverse of the medallion. In his hand, the mysterious abbot holds ascroll with the rest of the words written on the medallion. The first knownleaflet regarding the medallion was published in Innsbruck (1664). On theobverse there are two concentric circles with the IHS monogram (meaning JesusChrist) inside them. The first letters of the words that are still on theobverse today are stamped around them. The reverse of the medallion almostcoincides with today\'s version. It is worth noting the lack of an image ofSaint. Benedict. The figure of the Saint appears on the leaflet itself - theabbot from Monte Cassino holds a cross and makes a gesture of blessing. Themedallion became very popular in the 17th century. Saint Vincent de Paul,founder of the Sisters of Charity, ordered nuns to wear it with their rosaries.Unfortunately, the medal was also used for superstitious practices. It wasplaced in stables to reverse spells, and buried under the doorsteps of housesto ensure the prosperity of the inhabitants. Only the abbot of Legnickie Pola,Father Benno Loebl, attempted to have the medal approved by the Pope. Theefforts of the Silesian abbot were crowned with success in 1742. Then PopeBenedict XIV ordered that the image of Saint be placed on the medallion. Benedict.The saint was depicted wearing a cukulka, with a cross in his hand, blessing orholding his index finger to his lips. The medal often had the shape of anellipse or heptagon.
