A limited number of 2-inchbronze medals were minted in Rome and used as gifts for wealthy Catholicpatrons. That medal helped the bishop (Francisco de Aguiar y Seijas) fund theBuilding of the new Basilica from 1682-1708; one of those medals from mymother\'s collection, is offered here for your consideration.
Bertha (the late founder of Church-Woman Antiques, whopassed away in 2010), became the principal collector of these medals; few comeup for sale, and none are available today except here; in short, sheacquired all available medals during her lifetime of collecting all over theworld.
Each medal you receive will be special. The medal you seein the posted pictures, is the medal from her collection you will receive.
The story of the 1531 Guadalupe apparition of the VirginMother Mary is one of the most fascinating in all of Catholic lore. Accordingto accounts, a poor Indian by the name of Juan Diego came across a vision ofwhat he described as a \'lady from heaven\' while on a mountainside in NorthwestMexico City. According to Diego, this woman instructed him to create a temple atthe site of this vision. In addition, she somehow imprinted her likeness intohis cactus-cloth. Although such cloth normally deteriorates rapidly over time,Diego\'s cloth survives to this day, more than 470 years after the apparition,in defiance of scientific rationale. Today, the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupeis one of the most important Catholic churches in the Western hemisphere. Alltold, more than 10 million people visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupeevery year. Pope John Paul II, for his part, made pilgrimages to this Mexicansanctuary four times during his tenure as the leader of the Catholic Church. Aswith the so-called Miraculous Medal, which stirred religious feeling in 19thcentury France, the Our Lady of Guadalupe medal has helped to focus Catholicpassions in America.
