Anubis was an ancient Egyptian god of the dead, mummification, and embalming. He was depicted as a man with the head of a jackal or a dog. Anubis played a crucial role in the funerary rites of ancient Egypt, as he was responsible for weighing the hearts of the deceased against the feather of truth. If the heart was found to be heavier than the feather, it was devoured by Ammit, the devourer of the dead. Anubis was also a protector of graves and tombs.

The ancient Egyptians considered that the god Thoth was the one who taught them writing and arithmetic (see the arithmetic of the ancient Egyptians), and he is always depicted holding a pen and a tablet to write on. He has an essential role in the Court of the Dead, where the dead person is brought after resurrection to perform the operation of weighing his heart before the feather of truth, Maat.
