Sir John Stanier Waller, 7th Baronet(27 July 1917 –22 January 1995) was an English author, poet and journalist. He was one of thegroup ofCairo poetsduringWorld War II. Waller was the son of Captain Stanier Waller andAlice Harris, who was a barmaid before she married; Captain Waller died ofwounds from theFirst World War. John waseducated atWeymouth CollegeandWorcester College, Oxford.In 1939, he founded the magazineKingdom Come, which he edited.Waller served in the Middle East from 1941 to 1946 and was initially withtheRoyal Army Service Corps.Then he was posted to the Ministry of Information, where his sergeant-major wasthe poetG. S. Fraser. During histime inCairo, he founded theSalamander SocietywithKeith Bullen (poet)andJohn Cromer, and launchedOasis: the Middle East Anthology of Poetryfrom the Forcesin August 1943. After the war, Waller had a number ofpoetry collections published, such asThe Merry Ghosts,CrusadeandTheKiss of Stars. He edited books and was presented with the Greenwood Awardfor Poetry in 1947 and became a Fellow of theRoyal Society ofLiteraturein 1948. He was also Information Officer in theOverseas Press Division of theCentral Office ofInformation. In 1954, on the death of Sir Edmund Waller, 6thBaronet, he inherited thebaronetcy.However, he lost his inherited income, asbusiness ventures failed, and he gave up writing. Waller was awarded the KeatsPrize in 1974. In 1976, he helped set up the Salamander Oasis Trust. This wasoriginally intended just to reprintOasis, but Waller suggested collating as much as possibleof the material that had not been used, which resulted in four anthologies. Wallerlived inIsleworth, and in 1974 he married AnneEileen Mileham. The marriage ended in divorce, without children; Lady Wallerwas declared bankrupt in 1990.He died atVentnor,Isle of Wighton 22 January 1995.
