Stalactites are formed from calcium carbonate and other minerals, which are deposited in mineralized water solutions. Limestone is a rock of calcium carbonate, which is dissolved by air containing carbon dioxide, thus forming a solution of calcium bicarbonate.
This solution flows through the rock until it reaches an edge, and if this edge is on the roof of the cave the solution will drip down. When the solution comes into contact with air, the reverse chemical reaction occurs and the calcium carbonate particles are deposited as deposits.
The average growth rate of stalactites is 0.13 mm (0.005 in) a year. The fastest growing stalactites are those formed by rapidly flowing air rich in calcium carbonate and carbon dioxide, so they can grow 3 mm (0.12 in) per year.
