FrancisRaymond Evershed, 1st Baron Evershed,PC(8August 1899 – 3 October 1966) wasBritishjudgewho served asMaster of the Rolls, andsubsequently became aLaw Lord.Evershedwas the son ofFrank Evershed, a brewerand sportsman, and his wife Florence Helen, daughter of Thomas Lowe. He waseducated atClifton CollegeandBalliol College, Oxford.During theFirst World Warhewas a Second Lieutenant in theRoyal Engineers. In January 1923, he wascalled to the barbyLincoln's Inn. He then practiced at the Chancery bar.Evershed was made aK.C.in 1933 and aBencherof Lincoln's Inn in 1938. He became aHigh CourtJudge in1944 when he was knighted, andLord Justice of Appealin1947, when he was also made aPrivy Counsellor.Between 1949 and 1962, he wasMaster of the Rollsandserved as the U.K. Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration atThe Haguein 1950.He was raised to thepeerage asBaron Evershed, ofStapenhillin theCounty of Derby, on 20 January 1956. In 1962, he was madeaLord of Appeal in Ordinary,and was succeeded as Master of the Rolls byLord Denning.LordEvershed married Cecily Elizabeth Joan, daughter of Sir Charles Alan Bennett,in 1928. The title became extinct on his death in October 1966, aged 67.
