An ORIGINAL, NOT A COPY, NOR REPRODUCTION AUTHENTIC RARE and UNIQUE LARGE (15\' 3\" x 6\' 6\") TAPA CLOTH from the island of TONGA commemorating the 1952 Coronation the late Queen Elizabeth II. For years I owned an antiques shop in Santa Cruz, California. The best part of having a shop is the amazing people that come in. One was EDMOND PHILIPPET. Not only was he a founding partner in the world famous Capitola, California restaurant SHADOWBROOK, a favorite haunt of Alfred Hitchcock and other famed Hollywood actors, but was also a South Sea island explorer and adventurer. I was honored to meet him in 1998. He had heard I collected signed books and brought me the one I am offering here with the 1952 Elizabeth II Coronation Tapa Cloth. This old boy had a twinkle in his eyes and we engaged in an hours long conversation. I listened more than I talked, which was rare...I told him about my many many trips to England, my son being born there and how much I enjoyed English history. He told me many great stories about sailing adventures in the South Seas.He was an amazing chap! He mentioned the Coronation Tapa Cloth, which he still owned. I was interested. Within the next few days he brought it to me! He told me it was given to him as a present by a member of the Tonga Royal Family and how he had treasured it though the years even putting it on display for a short time at his famous restaurant SHADOWBROOK. It is amazing! Large and beautifully made from barkcloth and decorated with a Crown and the words ELIZABETH II 1953; it is quite impressive. There are other words and designs on the cloth which I have never learned about.The story of Tonga\'s Queen Salote Tupou III at Elizabeth\'s coronation is legend! (google it) so much so that Queen Elizabeth\'s first official trip as Queen in late 1953 was to TONGA to visit the 6 foot tall Queen Salote Tupou III and thank her for her enthusiasm during the Coronation. It was during that visit where this cloth was first used...Not sure when exactly it was given to Mr. Philippet, but he treasured it dearly and it is an amazing piece of history. A unique piece.As you can see by the inscription in the book, a 1979 BOXED PADDLE AWARD EDITION, Mr. Philippet was intricate in South Sea Adventures having donated a paddle for the historic HOKULEA sailing!

This is a giant TAPA CLOTH which measures approximately 15 feet 3 inches x 6 feet 6 inches. See the little stick on the ground on the left edge next to the Tapa Cloth: that\'s a 3 foot long yard stick.
