Extremely rare USAF SILK AVIATION/ESCAPE MAP of IRON CURTAIN COUNTRIES Poland, Romania and USSR!!
This very high-quality, very detailed two-sided silk aviation map was made by the U.S. War Department in 1952 at the height of the Cold War for plotting flights over and, worst case scenario, escape routes out of Poland, Romania and the Soviet Union!!
One side is centered on Lublin, Poland to Zhitomir, Russia, the other on Bucharest, Romania. The map folds down neatly to the size of a thin, narrow wallet!!

This silk escape and evasion map was made in 1953 by the Geographical Section General Staff (G.S.G.S.) in Great Britain and features Sweden, Estonia, Norway, Russia, and Latvia. Silk maps were originally developed during World War II to help British soldiers escape enemy territory or POW camps, and continued to be produced after the War ended in both Great Britain and the U.S. These silk maps were developed for MI9 by Charles Clayton Hutton to help British troops find their way back to their regiments if their planes were shot down in hostile territory or if they were captured in POW camps. Hutton had to find a material that was water-resistant, crease-resistant, and could be easily hidden and noiselessly manipulated. After extensive testing, Hutton found the perfect material: silk. Printed on silk, Hutton’s maps could be folded and hidden in boot heels, jacket linings, or even-most ingeniously-Monopoly game boards, and go completely undetected. 1952 Origin:Great Britain Material:Printed Silk Condition:Excellent Dimensions:37.25\" x 24\"
