RARE 1950s SHERATON HOTEL GOLD SERVICE CHARGER PLATE 10 3/4\" CASTLETON STUDIOS:
$200.00

TO DESCRIBE THIS PIECE ACCURATELY, I MAKE EXTENSIVE REFERENCE AND COMPARISON BELOW TO THE WHITE HOUSE SERVICE PLATES COMMISSIONED BY PRESIDENT EISENHOWER IN 1955. BUT I WANT TO BE CLEAR: THIS LISTING IS FOR A SHERATON HOTEL CHARGER/SERVICE PLATE. THERE IS NO WHITE HOUSE PLATE INCLUDED IN THIS LISTING.
NO WHITE HOUSE PLATE IN THIS LISTING.
A little history lesson first ...
Castleton China is out of business now, but they were a highly respected pottery manufacturer during their heyday, even producing a set of Official Service Plates for President Dwight D. Eisenhower and his wife Mamie, and a full White House China set for President Lyndon Baines Johnson and his wife Lady Bird.
The set of 120 Eisenhower White House service plates were brilliant, gold covered pieces. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower selected this regal pattern - translucent ivory porcelain richly decorated in gold, with the presidential seal at center encircled by fifty stars, and the rims covered in a thick border of real embossed coin gold. According to the second edition of the authoritative guide, \'\'Official White House China\'\', the creation of these ornate plates \'\'...required eight separate firings to achieve the desired finish...\'\' The cost in 1955 was $3,606.40 for the set. Mamie Eisenhower is responsible for spearheading the White House China preservation effort and personally took up a collection of porcelain samples from prior administrations. The underside of these White House plates bears the maker\'s stamp in gold and black, \'\'Castleton Studios / The White House / November 1955 / Made in USA\'\'. The Eisenhower White House plates measured 11.5\'\' in diameter.
The very last photo in this listing is of the Eisenhower White House Service plate made by Castleton Studios. The inset in that photo shows an image of the back stamp.
The Eisenhower White House service plates do occasionally come up for sale, though that is rare because there were only 120 made. In February of 2020, RR sale sold one of them for $5,706.00 (including buyer\'s premium).
NO WHITE HOUSE PLATE IN THIS LISTING.
And now on to this listing ...
This listing is for a charger/service plate manufactured by Castleton Studies with the Sheraton Hotel logo in the center. If you compare the pattern of the thick gold rim on this plate to the Eisenhower White House plates, you will see that the pattern is identical. The back stamps on the two plates are also nearly identical. Measures 10 3/4\" in diameter.
Despite extensive research, I could find no similar plate for Sheraton Hotels by Castleton Studios (or any other manufacturer) on the internet. The gold border on this plate is thick and textured - reminds me of moriage. Assuming the border of this plate is made of \"real embossed coin gold\" like the Eisenhower service plates, the value of the gold alone is worth hundreds of dollars. I would find it difficult to believe these were mass produced for use in Sheraton Hotel restaurants. (According to Merriman-Webster dictionary, coin gold is gold of the fineness legalized for coins (such as .900 fine in the U.S.). Maybe Castleton had some left over without the White House logo in the center and they added this logo and produced it as a sample Sheraton ... who knows. The possibilities are endless. At any rate, this plate is very rare indeed and may even be a one of a kind sample.
No chips, cracks, repairs, or other unusual wear. Absolutely lovely.
NO WHITE HOUSE PLATE IN THIS LISTING.
