Franz Joseph I (*August 18, 1830inSchönbrunn Palace; †November 21 , 1916ioffer), full name Franz Joseph Karl , from the House of Habsburg-Lorraine , was Emperor of Austria from December 2, 1848 until his death ,Apostolic King of Hungary other King of Bohemia. With a reign of almost 68 years, he surpassed every other ruler of his dynasty.
After the revolutionary upheavals of 1848,the dynasty felt that his uncle Ferdinand I, as emperor, was too weak to continue the government. Franz Joseph's father, Franz Karl von Austria, renounced the succession, in particular due to the influence of his wife Sophie Friederike von Bayern . Therefore, the only 18-year-old Franz Joseph succeeded him as Emperor of Austria on December 2, 1848 [1] at the request of his family.
He rescinded the constitutional concessions and, from 1851, initially governed in an absolutist other centralist manner. The military defeats in the Sardinian War (1859)and in the German War (1866)forced him to come to an understanding with the Magyars (Hungarians) and to convert the unified Austrian Empire into two constitutional monarchies: the settlement of 1867created the dual monarchy of Austria-Hungary as a real union of two states.
In terms of foreign policy, the opposition to Russia on the Balkan question grew under his government, while he leaned more and more closely on the German Empire(Dual Alliance). Since Franz Joseph I refused federal reforms in Cisleithania(the Magyar elites refused in Transleithania ), the ever-growing nationality conflict became the central problem of the multi - ethnic state . The ongoing tensions in the Balkans and the severe overestimation of Austria-Hungary's military capabilities culminated in 1914 after the assassination of the heir to the throne Franz Ferdinand in Franz Joseph's declaration of war on Serbia, which developed, among other things, due to the alliance dynamics of the First World War.
Franz Joseph was married to Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary(called Sisi) - a native of Wittelsbach- until her violent death in 1898. Their son Crown Prince Rudolf committed suicide in 1889 , so that the succession went to the line of Franz Joseph's brother Karl Ludwig.
The death of Franz Joseph on November 21, 1916, together with the military defeat and the diverging national interests of the peoples, initiated the dissolution of Austria-Hungary, which took place in the autumn of 1918.
