Nathaniel Jarvis, Jr., a New York lawyer with strong connections to Tammany Hall, wasnamed Clerk of the Court of Common Pleas in 1858 and held the office for many years.Jarvis is mentioned fairly often in newspaper reports of the time. For example, in 1870he served as referee in a sanity hearing for one Richard Winthrop, whose wife anddaughter had sought to have him declared insane for selling family property toocheaply.
