Letter to an American concerning efforts to promote better US-Jordan understanding.
Typed Letter signed: \"Noor Al-Hussein\", 1 page, 8½x10½, No place, 1984 May 2. On royal letterhead to Emile Gex, Picayune, Mississippi. In full: \"Thank you for your letter of April 5th, including the clipping from the Times-Picayune. Our visit to the United States was challenging and surprisingly rewarding. I hope that our efforts will bear the fruits of peace. Thank you for your suggestions concerning professional public relations firms. His Majesty has many advisors, but as you know the reversal of deep-seated biases takes time and patience. We shall keep striving to foster better understanding between the peoples of Jordan and the United States. It gives me great pleasure to enclose a photograph, as you requested. [Item not included.] Thank you for your support and concern. With best wishes\". Queen Noor Al-Hussein of Jordan (born Lisa Najeeb Halaby in the United Statesin 1951), was the daughter of second generation Syrian-American Najeeb Halaby, who headed the Federal Aviation Administration under President Kennedy. She was a member of Princeton\'s first co-ed graduating class (1973), majoring in Architecture and Urban Planning. In 1977, working for Royal Jordan Airlines on construction of a new airport named for the late Queen Alia, third wife of Jordan\'s King Hussein, she met the King, and the couple married in 1978. She converted to Islam, and became Noor Al-Hussein. As an American not born a Moslem, she gradually gained acceptance by the Jordanian people as her interest and affection for the country became obvious, but she was criticized by Islamic fundamentalist for her involvement in policy matters. The royal visit to the US in 1984 was indeed \"challenging\", as she states in this letter, because the King - a longtime friend and ally of the US - criticized America for uncritical support of Israel. Before his death in 1999, King Hussein named his eldest son by Noor, Prince Hamzah, as second in line to the throne, but that succession has since been set aside. Queen Noor remains very active in many United Nations and humanitarian causes, serving currently as President of the United World Colleges and of Global Zero, a movement against nuclear proliferation. Lightly creased near bottom corners. Fine condition. See more material from these signers:QUEEN NOOR AL-HUSSEIN (JORDAN) See more listings in our ROYALTY (410) category.
