Promotional Vintage Wax Cylinder "Have You Tried Wheaties" Jingle Ad - 1926:
$56.00

Own this wax cylinder containing the "Have You Tried Wheaties" jingle which originally aired on radio in 1926.

Note that the brown wax cylinder is circa 1902 and because brown wax cylinder production was largely phased out by 1906, it is likely that this recording is not a circa 1926 original created by Wheaties at that time but rather a more recently made copy of the wheaties jingle transferred onto an original brown wax cylinder, possibly made for a later promotional event. That being said it is still a very interesting keepsake.

If it wasn't for the "Have you Tried Wheaties" jingle sung on Christmas Eve in 1926 by a barbershop quartet in Minneapolis, Wheaties cereal would have been long forgotten by now.

Initially launched in the market as “Washburn's Gold Medal Whole Wheat Flakes,” in 1922 the name was changed in 1923 to "Wheaties."Soon after the song "Have you tried Wheaties?" aired in Minnesota, of the 53,000 cases of Wheaties breakfast cereal sold, 40,000 were sold in the Twin Cities market. After advertising manager Samuel Chester Gale pointed out that this was the only location where "Have You Tried Wheaties?" was being aired at the time, the success of the jingle was accepted by the company. Encouraged by the results of this new method of advertising, General Mills changed its brand strategy. Instead of dropping the cereal, it purchased nationwide commercial time for the advertisement. The resultant climb in sales single-handedly established the "Wheaties" brand nationwide and the rest, as they say "is history". The jingle lyrics are as follows:

Have you tried Wheaties?

They're whole wheat withall ofthe bran.

Won't you try Wheaties?

For wheat is the best food of man.

They're crispy and crunchy

The whole year through,
The kiddies never tire of them

and neither will you.
So just try Wheaties,

The best breakfast food in the land.

Overall Condition is "Very Good". The promotional container & container top are in very good condition, with some minor wear and fading consistent with age. The 120 year old cylinder itself is in very good condition for its age, with very little oxidation to the playing surface. Overall playback quality is "good" - with moderate background noise - consistent with brown wax cylinders of this era. Please check out the video and all photos before making a purchase.

Also included a "Wheaties Quartette" promotional card/music sheet and a USB drive with a video recording of this cylinder made on a 1903 Edison Standard Model B Phonograph so even if you don't have a wax cylinder phonograph you can still hear/see and sing/play along with this historical jingle. Please look at the video and all photos before making a purchase.
