Presidential Commission – Captain Andrew J. McGonnigle Asst. Quartermaster USA.

The commission has the stamped signatures of President Andrew Johnson, and Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton, and dated 15 May, 1866.

McGonigle entered the service as a captain in the Quartermaster Corps (U.S. Vols) on 18 March, 1864, Captain QM Corps. U.S.A. on 19 May 1865.

He remained in the Army after the Civil War, and was promoted to major in February of 1882.

McGonnigle received brevet rank for major and ltcol. for gallantry at the battles of Winchester, Fisher’s Hill, and Cedar Creek, and for Five Forks, Sailor’s Creek and Appomattox Court House, Va., respectively; and colonel for meritorious service during the Indian Campaign of 1869.

He retired in 1893, and died in January of 1901.

Andrew was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 19, 1864.

Citation:“The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain & Assistant Quartermaster Andrew Jackson McGonnigle, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 19 October 1864, while serving with U.S. Volunteers, in action at Cedar Creek, Virginia. While acting chief quartermaster of General Sheridan’s forces operating in the Shenandoah Valley, Captain McGonnigle was severely wounded while voluntarily leading a brigade of infantry and was commended for the greatest gallantry by General Sheridan.”

Fine condition with some very light staining.
