President James Garfield & Mother Eliza Cabinet Cards 1881 J.F. Ryder Cleveland:

As found, as shown in the photographs. Found in a Henniker NH estate, these are rare gelatin silver print cabinet cards from 1881, by J.F. Ryder of Cleveland Ohio. On the back, in fountain pen, a previous owner wrote President Garfield and Garfield’s Mother (Eliza Ballou) on the back lower. They have light curving, foxing and slight discoloration, but are in excellent condition for their age. For those who don’t know, Garfield was shot 3 months into his presidency in 1881, and died from infection 2.5 months later due to an unsanitary surgical procedure. This led to Chester Arthur becoming President and his shooter being hung to death in 1882.
