Pre Columbian Zapotec "Jaguar Mask" Jade Pendant
This Pendant shows the famous Jaguar Mask, discovered at the Monte Alban Archaeological site, the ancient capital of the Zapotec Culture
One of the most beautiful and impressive objects found during the archaeological explorations of Monte Albán is this pectoral mask in which a human face stands out wearing a jaguar mask. The object was used as a pectoral and was placed in this way as part of the offering of one of the five young adults, who were sacrificed in the shrine. The mask was delicately carved in 25 pieces of jade, the eyes and teeth were detailed with shell.
This Pendant is made from a dark green Jade Variety, the Jaguar Eyes and Ears are made from Mother of Pearl Shell inlays , as on the original one
