I believe this to be rare to find . . . SSOhiowas an ironpassenger-cargosteamshipbuilt byWilliam Cramp & Sonsin 1872. The second of a series of fourPennsylvania-classvessels,Ohioand her three sister the largest iron ships ever built in theUnited Statesat the time of their construction. Following the discovery of gold in Alaska in 1896, great demand was created for American-flagged ships to transport gold prospectors to Alaska during the resultinggold rush. On March 5, 1898,Ohiosailed from Philadelphia toSan Franciscoon thePacific Coast.There, the vessel was sold to theAlaska Steamship Company,and subsequently commenced servicing theSeattle-Nomeroute, which she was to maintain to the end. In 1907,Ohiostruck an iceberg in theBering Sea. Although the vessel survived the collision, 75 panicked passengers jumped overboard onto the ice, resulting in the loss of four lives. (more on the web about this) On August 26, 1909,Ohiohit an uncharted rock (which is now named Ohio Rock) atSarah Islandat the South end of Heikish narrows and the North end of Finlayson Channel,British Columbia where she sank . . .
