Post War Portrait "Smoke Break" Artist Charles Sneed Williams (1882-1964) 13":
$95.59

This very rarephotographic portrait of renown portrait painter Charles Snead Williams speaks to the soul of an artiste in full maturity, confident and poised, taking a "smoke break". Acquired from the Louisville KY estate of his niece with provenance provided.

Bio excerpts: "Charles Sneed Williams considers himself an itinerant portrait painter, a lineal art descendant of those journeymen of brush and canvas who used to travel up and down and across the colonies and the early United States before art became ART, painting likenesses of serious-minded people contemplating dynasties, portraits to hang for future generations in “ancestral halls.”

Something considerably more than color is lent to this theory by the fact that Mr. Williams has three “permanent addresses,” one in Chicago, one in Louisville, and the third in London. Before the depression tightened its grip on painters in general, Mr. Williams had a fourth studio, in France." ~ CJ Bulleit, Artists of Chicago

Simultaneously, giving some further idea of the range of his itinerant habits, he exhibited a portrait in the Hoosier salon at Marshall Field’s, Chicago, and another at the Cercle de l’Union Artistique, Paris. He is one of three American artists to be elected to this club during the 55 years of its existence. There are 40 artists, mostly French, in a membership of 1,000. In the Paris exhibition is his portrait of Judge Robert Worth Bingham of Louisville, American ambassador to London.

The Filson Historical Society notes: Born in Evansville, Indiana in 1882, Charles Sneed Williams was a noted portrait painter. After graduating from Dupont Manual High School in Louisville, Ky., Williams went on to study art at Allan Fraser Art College in Arboath, Scotland, and would keep a residence in England until his death in London in 1964. In 1912, he married Elsie Luke, and would eventually have two children, William and Virginia. Williams painted a number of commissioned portraits of prominent men and women, including the 1st Marquess of Dufferin & Ava- Sir Frederick Temple (The British Museum), U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Louisville native Robert Worth Bingham. Williams also served as an air-raid warden in England during World War II. In 1929, the Kentucky Historical Society commissioned Williams to paint a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, which still hangs in the society’s permanent collection.
