Porcelain Staffordshire Cricketer of the 1890s c.1890-1910 A late Victorian two piece moulded porcelainfigurine of a Cricket Batsman. Unmarked except for an underglaze red 24 to theinside base. I call it Staffordshire because it is of the ageand style and was probably manufactured in the English Staffordshire Potteriesthat were so famous and productive at this time. It is a beautifully rendered piece, fully handpainted with Cobalt Blue on White Uniform highlighted with 22k Gold Trim. He is missing the bat which I can see wasmanufactured as an entirely separate piece and inserted into the gloved hands. I am presuming that the bat was a wooden piece asthere is no damage to the hands and the hole is quite symmetrical. (well, perhaps there is the tiniest of tiny veryold bite to the hole edge) Measures: 19cm high by 7.7cm x 5cm acrossthe base. Weight: 278g. CONDITION: Please bear in mind that these pieces were nevermeant to last 130 odd years, they were ornaments of their time. Thecondition is excellent and the attention to detail can be somewhat lacking. e.g.Slight seam opening on his right hand side, a little added porcelain piece tothe back of his left arm, and various little imperfections here and there whichare all firing faults probably as a result of hasty production. Theyall add to the natural charm of this interesting porcelain figure. Theonly real wear showing is to the gold trim which is faded in places. Postage includes full insurance.
