This extremely rare German colour postcard circa 1904 shows the Norwegian polar explorer Fridtjof Nansen\'s polar ship Fram in an unbelievably evocative polar setting - the polar sublime at its finest! The Fram makes her way through iceberg-infested waters, with a polar bear in the foreground, and a magnificent fiery sun in the background. Nansen led the Fram expedition from 1893 to 1895 to the Arctic Ocean north of Russia. Once the ship was beset in the ice, Nansen left the ship with a fellow crewmember, and made it to 86 degrees North, the farthest north record of the time. Nansen went on to become a celebrated statesman instrumental in bringing about Norway\'s independence from Sweden. He was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, offering asylum to half a million refugees and displaced persons at the end of the First World War. Nansen was one of the leading (and most successful) explorers of the heroic age of polar exploration.
