These seals are used in pairs; 40 pieces are included in our kit, comprising ten each in four different graduated sizes. These O-rings will stretch over the piston head, and seal tighter and with less friction than any other seals we've tried. No more time-consuming hand cutting and finishing of crumbly, fragile, cork washers!

Cork seals can last a long time, but cutting and finishing them is painstaking work, all of which can be undone in a moment of carelessness when the new seal splits, or is sanded down just a little too far. Cork holds up well when fully impregnated with grease and wax, but over time these lubricants get washed away, and the cork becomes prone to shrinkage and embrittlement.

After considerable experimentation, we have settled upon pairs of O-rings as the optimal form of replacement seal. The rings can readily be stretched into place, and the space between the rings provides a recess that can trap silicone grease, greatly reducing the need to relubricate. With rings of the correct size, the seal against the barrel wall is airtight, yet there is minimal friction.

We are currently providing seals in sets, with each set containing seals in four thicknesses, denoted as A, B, C, and D. Although we cannot guarantee that they will work in every pen, we have found that they fit the great majority of European piston-fillers that have come our way, including the original Pelikan 100 and Aurora 88, and a wide variety of German fountain pens, most of which fall into a relatively narrow range of barrel diameter dimensions.

Use at your own risk, and do not force. A properly-sized seal should allow the piston to move with only modest resistance, with the seal contacting the inside of the barrel continuously all the way around, from the outside appearing as a thin, unbroken line.

Note that these generally will NOT work on pens that originally used a specially-shaped molded synthetic seal. They are intended for use on piston-fillers that originally used seals of cork or stacked washers (such as the Aurora 88). This kit is identical to our Nozac piston seal kit, listed separately.
