Jean-Baptiste Kléber, born Mars 9, 1753 in Strasbourg, assassinated June 14, 1800 in Cairo in Egypt, is a French general who distinguished himself during the Revolutionary Wars, particularly in Vendée and Egypt. Initially an architect [1775], he served as an officer in the Austrian army until 1785. Engaged in 1792, he actively participated in the defense of Mainz, then, commander of the Mayençais vanguard in Vendée, he reported at Cholet on October 17, 1793, at Le Mans, then at Savenay in December 1793. In the Army of the North he fought at Fleurus [June 26, 1794] and, moving to the Army of Sambre and Meuse, he was victorious at Altenkirchen [June 4, 1796] and received the capitulation of Frankfurt [July]. In disagreement with Jourdan, he resigned [December] then returned to service in Egypt in 1798, where he commanded the army after the departure of Bonaparte, in August 1799. Signatory of the convention of El-Arich with the English on January 24, 1800, he then defeated the Turks at Heliopolis [ Mars 18] and suppressed the Cairo revolt in April, where he was assassinated the following June 14.

Marginal foxing, otherwise beautiful state of conservation.
