Antique cabinet card photograph of soldiers, believed to be taken atCamp Saunders in Lincoln, Nebraska, prior to these men being transferredtoCamp Chickamauga, Chattanooga National Military Park, Walker County, Georgia,during the Spanish American War, 1898.An embossed stamp on the lower left corner of the cabinet card credits the photographer: “Matzen & Co. 1496 Farnam St. Omaha.”

The photo depicts soldiers seated around a makeshift table, eating a meal, some enjoying an after-meal smoke. Tents in the background. The inscription on the back reads “Merry Xmas ’99, from the 1stSergeant, John G. Lund.\" Sergeant Brower E. McCague of Omaha, Nebraska is seated second from the left in the photo. Other individuals shown have not been identified. Our research indicates they were part of Company G, Second Nebraska Infantry. They left Camp Saunders in Lincoln, Nebraska for Camp Thomas, Georgia, arriving May 22, 1898. Listed in Company G: J.A.C. Kennedy, Eli Hodgins, John G. Lund, William M. Barnum, Oliver G. Osborne, Brower McCague, George R. Purvis, G. Harley Conant, Herman B. Kinney, and Lee L. Hamlin (credit genealogytrails . com).

Photo measures approximately 5.5 x 7 inches, and 10 x 12 inches overall with the cabinet card. We are including an additional (bonus) reprint (reproduction) of the original photo, which was printed in 1939.
