In telling the story, it is fortunate that the PRR was so highly institutionalized. For the paper trail was considerable. There are numerous periodic lists that tabulated, referenced, assigned and classified the diesels, just as the steam locomotives had been extensively documented in previous years.In addition to material which has been preserved privately, considerable PRR diesel locomotive documentation has been preserved in such archives as the Pennsylvania State Archives in Harrisburg, the Hagley Library and Museum in Wilmington, Delaware and the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania near Strasburg, Pennsylvania. While it is a useful clue, for example, to hear an anecdote that a certain diesel model was expensive to maintain, an actual memo between PRR motive power executives stating that \"we can obviously ill-afford to continue to operate these locomotives,\" makes it possible to present the facts with assurance.Three types of tables appear throughout this book. All of them are there to provide detailed information without unduly bogging down the flow of text. These tables, and the roster that is included as an Appendix, are the distillation of many hours of painstaking research and cross-checking through the pertinent files. The first table type is the Order Summary, showing which locomotives in a class were part of which order. The second series of tables groups together similar locomotives in a series of Locomotive Characteristics tables showing equipment and ratings.
