In 2014, russiainvaded and annexed Crimea, andRussian-backed separatistsseized part of theDonbasregion of south-eastern Ukraine, consisting ofLuhanskandDonetskoblasts, sparkingaregional war.In 2021, russia beganalarge military build-upalong its border with Ukraine, amassing up to 190,000 troops and their equipment. Ina televised addressshortly before the invasion, russian presidentVladimir Ukraine'sright to statehood,and falselyclaimedUkraine was governed byneo-Naziswho persecuted theethnic Russian minority.On 21 February 2022,russia recognisedtheDonetsk People's republicand theLuhansk People's republic, two self-proclaimed breakawayquasi-statesin Donbas.The next day, theFederation Council of russiaauthorised the use of military force, and Russian troops promptly advanced on both territories.

The invasion began on the morning of 24 February,when Putinannounceda "special military operation" to "demilitariseanddenazify" Ukraine.Minutes later, missiles andairstrikeshit across Ukraine, including the capitalKyiv. A large ground invasion followed from multiple directions.Ukrainian presidentVolodymyr Zelenskyyenactedmartial lawand ageneral mobilisationof all male Ukrainian citizens between 18 and 60, who were banned from leaving the country.russian attacks were initially launched on anorthern frontfrom Belarus towards Kyiv,anorth-eastern fronttowardsKharkiv,asouthern frontfromCrimea, andasouth-eastern frontfromLuhanskandDonetsk.During March, the russian advance towards Kyiv stalled. Amidst heavy losses and strong Ukrainian resistance, russian troops retreated fromKyiv Oblastby 3 April. On 19 April, russia launchedarenewed attackon Donbas, which has been proceeding very slowly, withLuhansk Oblastonly fully captured by 3 July,while other fronts remained largely stationary. At the same time, russian forces continued to bomb both military and civilian targets far from the frontline, including in Kyiv,Lviv,Serhiivka near OdesaandKremenchuk, among others. On 20 July, russian foreign ministerSergey Lavrovannounced that russia would respond to the increased military aid being received by Ukraine from abroad as justifying the expansion of the 'special operations' front to include military objectives in both theZaporizhzhia OblastandKherson Oblastbeyond the original objectives of the oblasts of the Donbas region.

The invasion has receivedwidespread international condemnation. TheUnited Nations General Assemblypassedaresolutioncondemning the invasion and demanding a full withdrawal of russian forces.TheInternational Court of Justiceordered russia to suspend military operations and theCouncil of Europeexpelled russia. Many countriesimposed sanctionson russia, which haveaffected the economiesof Russia and the world,and providedhumanitarian and military aid to Ukraine.Protests occurredaround the world;those in russiawere met with mass arrests and increasedmedia censorship,including a ban on the words "war" and "invasion".TheInternational Criminal Courthas openedan investigationintocrimes against humanityin Ukraine since 2013, as well aswar crimes in the 2022 invasion.
