This patch belongs to the 4010th LaborService Company (Polish) that was tasked with guarding Landsburg Prison inaddition to actions during the War Crime Trials. Landsberg, at one time held, amongst others,Rudolf Hess and it was in Landsberg Prison in the 1920's that Mein Kampf waswritten (although then not a military prison). Landsberg Prison was the landing spot of warcriminals prosecuted at the Dachau Trials, more than 200 executions took placeat Landsberg between 1946 and 1951. Designated by the US Military as 'WarCriminal Prison No. 1', Landsberg was eventually closed by the United States asa Military Prison in 1958. Between 1945 and 1946, the prison housed atotal of 110 prisoners convicted at the Nuremberg trials, a further 1416 warcriminals from the Dachau trials and 18 prisoners convicted in the Shanghaitrials, (These were military tribunals conducted by the American forces inJapan between August 1946 and January 1947 to prosecute 23 German officials whohad continued to assist the Japanese military in Shanghai after the surrenderof Nazi Germany.) In five and half years, Landsberg prison wasthe place of execution of nearly 300 condemned war criminals. 259 deathsentences were conducted by hanging and 29 by firing squad. Executions were carried out expeditiously. InMay 1946 twenty eight former SS guards from Dachau were hanged within afour-day period. Bodies that were not claimed were buried inunmarked graves in the cemetery next to the Spöttingen chapel. Measures - 4 inches in diameter (10 cms)
