The namesake for this release was taken from a battered sign I drive by on my way to work every day. While I’ve never attended the Pageant of Steam, or any steam fair for that matter, I love old things, and this little piece of Americana brings me a little joy every time I pass it: pastoral and quaint, overgrown by fragrant grasses and weeds. It’s the perfect name for my first real summer freshie, a perfume that ONLY utilizes steam distilled ingredients. Well, mostly.

One question I get frequently this time of year: When are you going to release a light and fresh scent? The truth is, I wasn’t really planning on doing it ever. Fresh scents just aren’t really my style, not to mention that when you’re using all natural ingredients, it’s hard to really make a fresh scent last. Almost every fresh scent you’ve ever smelled utilizes some degree of ACs to prolong its short life. I always thought I’d save this profile for the big houses, after all they have made COUNTLESS successful fresh scents, beloved by many, and so many niche houses miss the mark entirely: see all of those lavender-centric scents that smell like Whole Foods/your local CO-OP. But, the right amount of pressure was applied and I finally caved, and honestly, I’m really glad I made this.

This is not your typical fresh scent.

PoS owes its uniqueness to a duo of not-so-piney Japanese conifers (Hokkaido Todomatsu and Toyama Kuromoji,) an unusual double distillation of Indian Round Cypress, and a HEFTY overdose of insanely expensive Japanese Shiso imported directly from Japan, not the variety that every modern perfumer gets from Aftelier.

There is no lavender in this composition, florals make up only 3 percent of the formula, the citrus notes are not primary, and the vetiver of the base is not that shiny emerald Hindi Ruh Khus either. Instead, those rarely used crisp wooden notes are built on top of a switchgrass style Haitian vetiver, a bright white steam distilled oud from Indonesia, and a slightly camphorous Hinoki. It is then topped with a teeny tiny touch of Turkish rose otto, mango leaf, osmanthus leaf, Aurucaria, neroli, ginger, lime leaf and cubeba.

The only materials in the entire composition that aren’t steam distilled were added whole: onycha operculum shells crushed in my mortar and pestal, and one single 1” x 1” square of kombu.

If asked to describe in my own words how this smells I would say something like this: Pageant of Steam resides somewhere in the center of an unlikely trifecta: between the grassyness of DS and Durga’s cowboy grass, the buttoned up fleur de cuir of ALD’s Cuirtis, and the zippy-green zing of Di Ser’s Hana Matsuri.
