She moved to New York City with her family and studied at the Juilliard School of Music and the American Academy of the Dramatic Arts. She made her film debut in 1955 in Bring Your Smile Along, and later starred in several movies directed by Samuel Fuller, such as The Horse Soldiers, Sergeant Rutledge, Shock Corridor, and The Naked Kiss. She also appeared in many TV shows, including The Bob Cummings Show, The Outer Limits, Zane Grey Theatre, and Perry Mason.
She received two Emmy Award nominations for her roles on Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and Capitol. She is best known for playing the villainous Helena Cassadine on General Hospital since 1997. She is also a successful musical theater actress, who has performed in Broadway productions of Anya, Show Boat, The Sound of Music, and The King and I. She won the Outer Critic\'s Circle Award for her portrayal of Maria in The Sound of Music.
