Fragment of a handwritten note by Prince Arthur William on black-bordered stationery, telling the recipient that he can attend a garden party
Autograph fragment signed: \"Arthur\", 1p, 4¼x4¼, black-bordered stationery, mounted on 4¼x4¾ white paper. In full: \"Many thanks for your work - I will keep myself free to attend the Garden Dinner on Jany 8h. I am very glad that the Prince had changed the May. [illegible] to enable me to attend - believe me yours very sincerely\". Prince Arthur William (1850-1942) was a British Army officer and politician. Arthur entered the Army as a lieutenant in the late 1860s and served in South Africa, Canada, Ireland, Egypt and India, eventually rising to the rank of Field Marshall in 1902. He held a number of positions after this, including Commander-in-Chief in Ireland (1900-4), Inspector-General of the Forces (1904-7), Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean (1907-9) and Governor-General of Canada (1911-6). He was also a Freemason and Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of England from 1901 to 1939, as well as president of Great Britain\'s Boy Scout Association. Lightly toned and creased. Handwriting, but not signature, has bled lightly in places, but is legible. Note is cut off at top. Adhesive residue in lower right corner and bottom edge (does not touch signature).
