M-9734 CAPT. O.B. MORRISON, JR. (MC) U.S. NAVY ♠Osceola “Ocie” Butler Morrison, Jr. was born in Petersburg, Virginia, on November 20, 1896. ♠Ocie decided to pursue a medical career and attended the University of Virginia. However, his medical education was interrupted during World War I when he left the university to enroll as a Naval Aviation cadet.
♠World War I would end before Ocie could fly into combat, and he was transferred to inactive duty in the Naval Reserve in December 1918. He returned to the University of Virginia and completed his M.D. in 1925 before entering the Medical Corps of the Navy in June 1925. ♠By 1941, Ocie was now a Navy Lieutenant Commander and senior medical officer attached to the Marine Corps on the U.S.S. Chicago (CL/CA 29). On the morning of December 7, 1941, the U.S.S. Chicago was about 420 miles southeast of Midway Island, escorting the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Lexington on a mission to deliver planes to the island's airfield. After hearing of the Pearl Harbor strike, the task force immediately began a search for the Japanese attack force. ♠Ocie was on the U.S.S. Chicago as its medical officer when it engaged with the Japanese during the Battle of the Coral Sea on May 4 - May 8, 1942. This battle was a major naval battle with the Imperial Japanese Navy. ♠Ocie was also on the U.S.S. Chicago when it again battled the Japanese during the invasion of Guadalcanal & Tulagi on August 7-8, 1942. On August 9, the U.S.S. Chicago was badly damaged by a torpedo hit in the bow during the Battle of Savo Island. ♠By April 1944, Ocie had been attached to the I Marine Amphibious Corps (MAC) as a USMC Surgeon, renamed the III Amphibious Corps on April 15. Ocie and the III Amphibious Corps arrived during the initial landing on Guam on July 21, 1944. ♠For his Heroic Service during combat on the island, Ocie was awarded the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” for Valor. ♠Ocie was on the U.S.S. Mount McKinley during the assault on Peleliu on September 15, 1944.Ocie was a Corps Surgeon attached to the III Amphibious Corps when he disembarked on Peleliu Island to treat the wounded. He would remain there until October 21, 1944.♠Ocie was still the Corps Surgeon attached to the III Amphibious when he disembarked at Okinawa on April 3. For his service during combat on the island, Ocie was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal with Combat "V" for Valor.♠Across his World War II Pacific campaigns at Guam, Peleliu, and Okinawa, Ocie would receive the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" and a Gold Star and an Oak Leaf Cluster for being awarded it the second and third time. He would also receive the Legion of Merit with Combat "V" and Gold Star for obtaining it a second time.♠After the war, Ocie served again during the Korean War and eventually retired as a Rear Admiral on November 30, 1958.
