VTG Pair Hand Carved Wood Folk Art Sculpture: Man Drumming & Woman Carrying Jug ~13\"
Era estimate: 1950s/1960s.Hand carved by an unidentified HAITIAN folk artist.
Hand carved wood. MAN: Figure 1 (LEFT) about 12\" tall. Standing. One arm raised in the air and the other on the drum he is firmly holding between his legs. Overall in good condition. One spot at his left hip, where the upper body meets up with the top of his hip, the wood looks a bit rough at the point where it indents, probably carved that way though.
He weighs about 4 1/4 ounces.WOMAN:Figure 2 (RIGHT) about 11 1/2\" tall. Walking. Carrying water jug on her head. Wood finish on the female sculpture is slightly more of a reddish brown than the male figure. Some discoloration (or rubbed away stain) near her left elbow and on her left hand. Tip of the water jug looks like it has a tiny chip (might also have just been carved that way). Right side between shoulder and breast is some irregularity in the finish (again, could have always been that way). On the rear of her skirt, there are a few irregularities in the finish.
She weighs about 3 3/4 ounces.The carving on the faces is done in a similar style and is quite angular. Quite likely that both were created by the same person.

These folk art hand carved wood tribal figures have minor scuffing.
Some unevenness in coloration (has likely always been this way).Original owner is relative of a good friend of mine, who inherited a mini-collection of carvings they purchased on their travels. It is known that they traveled to Haiti several times and that they purchased carvings there. I think that is the case with this pair of carvings, too. They either depict an African man & woman or a Haitian man & woman.
Not abused or displayed.
Climate controlled closet-stored (residential) until now.
