Outstanding Civil War Presentation U.S. 1850 Infantry/Foot Officer’s Sword
Period:US Civil WarCountry of Origin:United StatesOverall Length:37\" (approx.)Blade Length:30 1/2\" (approx.)*Condition:Excellent (please refer to photographs)Stock No:000738
An Outstanding Civil War Presentation U.S. 1850 Infantry/Foot Officer’s Sword By Horstman & Sons, Philadelphia Presented To “Michael New Salmon of the Sons of Liberty by his Father” Circa 1860. The blade superbly etched for 2/3rds of its length with American eagle, trophy of arms, cannon, and flourishes. Large U.S. and E Pluribus Unum. Beautiful maker’s signature at forte “W.H. Horstman and Sons Philadelphia”. The condition of the blade is nearly pristine with brilliant polish and frost etching little or no wear and only minor staining.
The hilt of characteristic form with 50%+ original gilding. Fishskin grip with three strand copper wire binding is excellent. Locket with superbly engraved presentation inscription. Scabbard mounts with 70% original gilding and for once no dents in shape. Leather with what but retaining traces of original black and is still stiff. The Sons of Liberty or The American Knights was an organization opposed to the Union during the Civil War and was particularly strong in Ohio. Most were so called Peace Democrats. The Sons of Liberty lost membership in 1864 after a series of Union victories and disbanded. The identity of Michael Ney Salmon remains obscure but doubtless diligent research may uncover his role in this treasonous organization. Regardless, this lovely Foot Officer’s sword is very fine in its own right and with the added historical value of a Sons of Liberty association it is a Civil Collector’s prize.
