Here is a nice example of a WWI German Iron Cross. One of the most famous military awards, around 5.1 million Iron Crosses in 2nd Class were handed out during WWI, each one for some individual feat of bravery in combat. These remained a source of pride for German veterans after the war, and having one by the time of WWII would have undoubtedly commanded respect as a personal symbol of the wearer’s meritorious Great War service. The cross is a multi-piece construction, with only the black core being made of iron, while the lighter outside borders are made of silver. The ring is marked by the maker “KO” for Königliches Münzamt Orden, or roughly the Royal Mint based in Berlin.

Overall in very nice condition. On the front side, the black finish is nearly spotless and has a great look paired with the patina on the silver edge. There are some minor spots of wear on the borders of the back side, but should not detract from its overall display value. The ribbon has light aging but appears to be original nonetheless. An attractive, classic piece for any WWI collection.
