MASS 2 - Marine Air Support Squadron 2 - Pacific Vagabonds

The squadron\'s mission included providing air traffic control, close air support coordination, and other aviation support services to Marine units in the field. MASS-2 worked closely with Marine ground commanders to coordinate air strikes, resupply missions, and medical evacuations, helping to maximize the effectiveness of Marine air power in Vietnam.

MASS-2 operated a variety of aircraft, including helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, and was known for its professionalism and dedication to supporting Marine ground forces. The squadron\'s efforts contributed significantly to the success of Marine operations in Vietnam and helped save the lives of many Marines wounded in combat.

The term \'Pacific Vagabonds\' derives from and pays homage to a group of six adventurous young men who embarked on a remarkable journey across the Pacific Ocean in two small sailboats in the 1930s. Their story is chronicled in the book \"Pacific Vagabonds\" by John H. Ritter.

In 1933, Walter B. Tansill, Harry Pidgeon, Morris \"Murph\" Hansen, William \"Bill\" Johnson, Bob Lutz, and Norman \"Spider\" McLeod set out from Long Beach, California, in two 35-foot-long sailboats, the Monsoon and the Sea Bird. Their goal was to sail across the Pacific to Hawaii, then on to Samoa and ultimately to Australia.

The journey was incredibly challenging, with the men facing storms, rough seas, equipment failures, and other hardships. Despite these difficulties, they persevered, relying on their seamanship skills and determination to continue their voyage.

After reaching Hawaii, the group split up, with some continuing on to Samoa and Australia, while others returned to the United States. Their journey captured the imagination of the public, and they were celebrated as daring adventurers who had accomplished a remarkable feat of seamanship and endurance.

The story of the Pacific Vagabonds highlights the challenges and dangers faced by sailors navigating the vast and unpredictable expanse of the Pacific Ocean.
